Processors of mobile phones that is smartphones and tablets have become very powerful and efficient. Most of us are aware of the features that technology-driven devices provide, but very few of us are informed about the core ingredient that brings all those features together.

It's the system on a chip or the chipset which integrates all the components of an electronic device and includes a central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU), memory, input/output ports, and secondary storage so that your device can function as required.

Qualcomm and MediaTek are companies which manufacture the motherboards for phones. The motherboard contains all the components pre-embedded when received from the company.

Both are very good at their work with the development in their chipsets and newest possible implementations and great innovation. Besides that, both have major differences that you should know.

Snapdragon is a suite of system on a chip (SoC) semiconductor products for mobile devices designed and marketed by Qualcomm Technologies Inc.

The Snapdragon central processing unit (CPU) uses the ARM RISC instruction set. A single SoC may include multiple CPU cores, an Adreno graphics processing unit (GPU), a Snapdragon wireless modem, a Hexagon Digital signal processor (DSP), a Qualcomm Spectra Image Signal Processor (ISP) and other software and hardware to support a smartphone's global positioning system (GPS), camera, video, audio, gesture recognition and AI acceleration.

The first Snapdragon product to be made available to consumer device manufacturers was the QSD8250, which was released in November 2007.

Snapdragon has a 3 type of the processor. There is Snapdragon 400 for entry-level, Snapdragon 600 for middle-end level, and Snapdragon 800 series for flagship smartphones.


MediaTek is a Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company that provides chips for wireless communications, High-definition television, handheld mobile devices like smartphones and tablet computers, navigation systems, consumer multimedia products, and Digital subscriber line services as well as optical disc drives. MediaTek has been creating chipsets for the global market. MediaTek also provides its customers with reference designs. The company was founded in 1997. It's relatively new in manufacturing processors for smartphones & tablets but has gained wide popularity and reorganization in the smartphones industry because of their cost-effective processors.

  • Snapdragon chipset has a low price with the best performance. This makes a lot of mobile phone manufacturer wants it.
  • MediaTek processor is cheaper than the Snapdragon and Exynos.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon is the processor that has the best performance and efficiency.

  • MediaTek processors are generic ARM CPUs. It does not modify the standards and specifications set under the ARM architecture.
  • Qualcomm designs its own brand of central processing units. These are the 64-bit processor Kryo core and the 32-bit Krait core. Both are either a custom or semi-custom ARM-based CPUs tweaked for power consumption and performance, among others.
  • Qualcomm designs its own series of GPUs called Adreno. It was initially developed under the Imageon brand of ATI Technologies that was later acquired by Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. or AMD in 2006. Qualcomm acquired Imageon from AMD in 2009 and renamed it Adreno. On the other hand, most of the GPUs found in MediaTek chipsets are from the Mali brand of ARM Holdings. Hence, MediaTek does not have its own GPU technology.
  • MediaTek has been widely used in entry-level to mid-range devices by new and established manufacturers. Hence, in terms of perception, MediaTek processors and chipsets are usually geared toward the entry-level and mid-range markets.
  • Qualcomm uses the latest and best ARM iterations and versions in its Snapdragon processors whenever they are available. On the other hand, MediaTek has the tendency to use older ARM iterations and versions or legacy ARM.
  • Qualcomm has its own Hexagon Digital Signal Processor or DSP for machine learning tasks while MediaTek has integrated artificial intelligence processing units or APUs.
  • MediaTek has also concentrated on designing and marketing processors and chipsets for the entry-level and mid-range markets while Qualcomm has focused more on designing and marketing Snapdragon processors for the mid-range to high-end markets.
  • The MediaTek chipsets are known to be more power draining and result in less battery life. Now they are optimizing their processors to be more power efficient. And Snapdragon chipsets are best in terms of power efficiency compared to all other chipsets.
  • Due to the availability of extra cores, MediaTek processors can handle intensive and heavy tasks and they are very good at multitasking. And Performance wise Snapdragon chipsets perform really well. In multitasking, gaming, handling heavy and intensive tasks Snapdragon chipsets are very good.
  • MediaTek processors deliver more heat than the others. More cores = more heat. On the other side, Snapdragon processors generally deliver less heat compared to Mediatek.
  • Snapdragon processors in mid to high-end smartphones or phones from well-known brands.
  • MediaTek processors are generally cheap and are they are widely used in the budget to mid-range smartphones.
  • The graphics part is better done by the Adreno GPU installed in all Snapdragon SoCs.
  • Qualcomm has harnessed its Hexagon digital signal processor for machine learning tasks in the last few years. The DSP usually handles tasks related to photography, audio, and connectivity, but the company turned the chip for machine learning.
  • MediaTek has introduced a dedicated AI processing unit (APU) to mid-range phones with the launch of the Helio P60. The MediaTek APU brings features like smart scene recognition, better facial recognition, and much more to mid-range phones.
  • MediaTek chipsets tend to be better in terms of both CPU speed and clock speed. Currently, the Helio P series and the 5G chipset from MediaTek are high in the news.
  • MediaTek chipsets generally offer better camera support per chipset against Snapdragon chipsets. MediaTek chipset would have a better camera performance than the other one.
  • MediaTek processors are cheaper and affordable than the Snapdragon processors hence making them more preferable price wise.
